Dear Fainted Brain,
On my Mac — which I'm pretty sure is the same for PC — I use an airport network at home with Earthlink DSL, a Time Warner DSL at my boyfriends, and different WiFi networks elsewhere. My complaint: Earthlink makes us use "mail.earthlink.net" as our SMTP server for my Thunderbird mail (and why is that?), but I use my own domain's SMTP for everywhere else, obviously. So, even though my computer recognizes all my happy regular networks, I have to go and change my damn SMTP networks every time I come home! This is hell, and it makes me spend 10, maybe even 20 seconds a day doing something I shouldn't have to do! Isn't there some way this can be automated, so I don't have to do a darn thing? Signed, Pissy in POP

Dear Gina, Earthlink requires you to use their SMTP server for "security reasons." Whatever those reasons are, switching servers just to send email is a time-consuming annoyance for the roaming laptop user. Rumor has it that Earthlink provides a "portable" SMTP server that their customers can access from any network. Alas, Earthlink support said they did not have this set up. (Your service provider might; give them a call.) There is a handy Thunderbird extension, Buttons, which lets you switch up your SMTP server from a single button on your toolbar. While this doesn't automate things, it can make the process take a whole lot less time. Here's how to install the Buttons extension: selectsmtp.jpg1. Download Buttons to your computer by right-clicking on the link and choosing "Save As."
2. In the Thunderbird "Tools" menu, choose "Extensions." Click on the + sign, and browse to and choose the buttons!-0.4.7-tb.xpi file you just downloaded.
3. Restart Thunderbird.
4. Control-click on the Thunderbird toolbar and choose "Customize." Drag and drop the "Select SMTP!" button onto your toolbar.
From your new "Select SMTP" button you can set up as many SMTP servers as you'd like, and switch them up in one click.

Good luck!
