How to download anything you ever wantedThis is a featured page

Many of you might have heard of bittorrent, but since i found out that in this website there is no mention of it, i decided to write an article concerning what we are all missing. If you want to know more about the history of bittorent, then go here.
But bittorrent is a technology, using which we can download applications, softwares, games, movies and virtually anything which we can use on a computer. Just follow the steps below, to get started.

Before we start, you must understand some key words of torrents.

Torrent: A file which is downloaded, which helps you download the file you want

Seeders: The more seeders that a torrent has the more quickly the file can be downloaded. It is also a measure of how popular/ good the file is.

Leechers: Leechers are people like you who are downloading the file right now. Once they complete downloading a file they become leechers, unless they opt to stop sharing the file. The less leechers there are, the more faster the file will download.

Now that you understand the keywords, follow these steps to download your favourite software/games/movies.

1.Install a bittorrent client
There are many bittorent clients available on the internet today. One of the most popular ones is utorrent. It can be downloaded for free from http://www.utorrent.com/download.php
It is a lightweight program (260 kb!) and is a quick install. Once installed, go to step 2.

2. Go to a torrent search engine
There are many torrent search engines out there, but there are only two outstanding ones. these are http://www.thepiratebay.org and http://www.mininova.org.
Go there and search for the application you want.
For example, i want to download Microsoft Office 2007. So, i follow this method.
  • Start utorrent
  • Go to http://www.thepiratebay.org
  • type "microsoft office 2007" in the search box without the quotes
Thepiratebay search for microsoft office 2007
  • Press enter or click on pirate search
  • Now, you will get a page full of results. Dont click on the first result. Since we want to download a file quickly, we will look for a file which has the highest number of seeders; so click on the "SE" tab to sort the results , such that the results are now sortedin order of decreasing seeders.
  • Now analyse the results as to which ones has the most difference between seeders and leechers.

  • Click on that torrent, and on the next page, be sure to read the comments, that other downloaders have written. This can tell you whether the author of the file can be trusted or not.
  • Then click on "Download this torrent".
  • A dialog box will open , asking you if you want to save or open the file. Click on "open the file", then utorrent should start downloading the file automatically

Now, after utorrent opens, it asks you where you want to save the file, save it to your desired place.
Then minimise utorrent.
Since utorrent is a small file, it doesnt take up much memory, and silently downloades the files in the background. When you minimise it, it miniises to the system tray (or the notification tray).
You might like to keep the computer on for more time, if you want to download the file quickly.

So, you might like to keep the computer on at night, while you are gone to sleep. In that case, you might also want to download "Tinnes shutdown Timer" which will shutdown your computer automatically at the time you specify.
